Annual Projects

We have many Annual Projects.

Children’s Garden Fair

The Children’s Garden Fair began in 2008 to encourage families to get outside and enjoy nature and gardening with their children. The event is co-sponsored by McLennan Master Gardeners and Carleen Bright Arboretum.  It is a free event that occurs each year on the Sunday following the closing of the H.O.T. Fair.   Live Music, pumpkin patch, scare crow contest and many Junior Master Gardener activities such as  potting plants and making paper sombreros fill this day. Other organizations as Master Naturalists, Master Composters,  Audubon Society,  and Gem and Mineral Society contribute activities that makes an enjoyable as well as educational day for all participants.

The 2017 Garden Fair will be held on October 15 from 2-5pm.

Annual Plant Sale

PlantSale_01The MCMG Plant Sale is our annual fundraiser and gives us a chance  to share our plants and educate the public about plants that will grow well in our area. Master Gardeners are available to answer  gardening questions.

The 2017 sale will be May 13 at the Westview Shopping Mall Atrium.

M.L.K. Day of Service

mlk
The MCMGs celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day volunteering at school gardens around the community with Urban Garden Coalition. We discuss the accomplishments of Dr. King and important part he played our history. This is not a “day off” from school. It is a “day of service and celebration.”

The 2017 MLK Day of Service is January 16, 2017.

Blackland Income Growth Conference

The Blacklands Income Growth (BIG) Conference began in 1962 to provide educational information for the agricultural and horticultural producers in the 12 county Central Texas area.  Its origin is a collaboration of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and a Board of Directors consisting of area producers and business people.  The Conference continues on annual basis. Master Gardeners have the responsibility for participant registration and the collection and disbursement of monies from the Conference attendees.

Party for the Planet at Cameron Park Zoo

EarthDay is celebrated in the natural beauty of Cameron Park Zoo with a “Party for the Planet.” Local nursery vendors, and information booths from many organizations including MCMGA participate each year. The goal is to raise awareness of environmental issues and to share earth friendly information. Master Gardener volunteers focus on children’s activities related to recycling and composting.
